Iced Strawberry Matcha Latte

Strawberry Matcha Latte

There is something truly magical about the combination of matcha and strawberry. The deep, earthy and nutty notes of matcha are perfectly complemented by the bright sweetness of strawberry, creating a balanced and refreshing drink. This Strawberry Matcha Latte isn’t just about the flavor, it is also about the beautiful layers of the drink. Whether it is a cozy morning or a quiet afternoon break, this one serving recipe is an aesthetic way to enjoy your daily caffeine.

Why This Layered Matcha Latte Works

Achieving the perfect layered effect and a smooth matcha texture requires a little bit of barista technique.

  • The 30-20-10 Whisking Method: This specific technique ensures your matcha is completely clump-free and has a delicate microfoam. It involves whisking in stages to fully incorporate the powder into a smooth liquid base.
  • The Paste Method: By starting with a tiny bit of water to create a thick paste, you “bloom” the matcha, which prevents those pesky dry lumps from ruining the texture of your latte.
  • Density Layering: We strategically add the strawberry puree first because it is the densest ingredient. By adding the ice and pouring the milk over it, we create a stable base that allows the lighter matcha to float beautifully on top.

Key Ingredients for a Vibrant Matcha Latte

To get that restaurant-quality look and taste, pay attention to these essentials:

Ceremonial Grade Matcha: For the most vibrant green color and a smooth, non-bitter taste, ceremonial grade is always the best choice for lattes.

Strawberry Puree and Syrup: Highly recommend using my homemade strawberry puree and syrup for the most authentic flavor. However, store-bought versions will also work well!

How to Assemble Your Strawberry Matcha Latte

This drink comes together quickly once your matcha is prepared.

Whisk the Matcha: Use the paste method and the 30-20-10 whisking technique to prepare your tea. Once frothed and smooth, set it aside.

Prep the Glass: In your serving glass, add the strawberry puree and the strawberry syrup first.

Build the Layers: Add ice to the glass and carefully pour in the cold milk.

The Final Pour: Gently pour the prepared matcha over the milk. You can pour it over the back of a spoon to keep the layers distinct. Stir well before drinking!

Strawberry Matcha Latte FAQs

Q: Can I use store-bought strawberry puree and syrup?

A: Absolutely, you can use store-bought versions for convenience. However, if you want the most vibrant fruit flavor, I have a homemade strawberry puree and syrup recipe linked on the blog that takes this drink to the next level!

Q: Do I have to use the 30-20-10 whisking method?

A: No, while I recommend this technique for the smoothest results, you can prepare your matcha with your preferred technique, such as using an electric milk frother or a traditional bamboo whisk in a “W” motion.

Q: I am worried the matcha will be too bitter. Is there a way to make it milder?

A: Not to worry. While matcha has a naturally earthy profile, the sweetness of the strawberry syrup and the creaminess of the milk act just like the dark chocolate in our hot cocoa recipes. It mellows the tea significantly, resulting in a balanced flavor Also, make sure not to add boiling water to the matcha when whisking it to avoid the matcha being bitter.

Prep Time 5 minutes
Total Time 5 minutes
Servings: 1
Course: Drinks

Ingredients

  • 4-5 grams ceremonial grade matcha powder (I used 5g)
  • 1 tbsp water room temperature
  • 3 tbsp water warm (not boiling, around 80°C water)
  • 1-2 tbsp strawberry puree (depending in preferred sweetness)
  • 2-3 tbsp strawberry syrup (depending in preferred sweetness)
  • 3/4 cup milk of choice
  • ice

Method

  1. Prepare your chasen by briefly soaking the tines in glass or bowl with warm water for about 20-30 seconds to soften them.
  2. Sift the matcha into a small bowl and add a tiny your room temperature water and stir with the chasen to create a smooth paste.
  3. Add the hot water and use the 30-20-10 whisking method (whisking for 30 seconds, 20 seconds, and 10 seconds with short breaks) until foamy. Set aside.
  4. In a tall glass, add the strawberry puree and strawberry syrup.
  5. Fill 3/4 of the glass with ice then pour the cold milk over the ice, leaving about an inch of space at the top.
  6. Carefully pour the whisked matcha over the milk to create the final layer. Stir well before enjoying.

Notes

To keep the layers distinct, pour the milk and matcha slowly. Using whole milk or oat milk provides the best creamy contrast to the earthy tea. I didn’t add any other syrup because the strawberry puree and strawberry syrup already provides enough sweetness for my personal preference, but you can add your preferred sweetener if you enjoy a sweeter drink.
